freakin 'n geekin out about BARBARIAN. 5 things i like about this very good scary movie
its now in my favourite lists of scary horror movies
it’s one of those movies that you gotta be disciplined not spoil the thrill...which dont watch trailers, read tweets, or watch this 2min pitch that would turn this into a feature, directed by Zack Cregger
i on the other hand watch the trailers, read tweets and watched the 2min pitch flick. I wished i hadnt...
cuz this is one well crafted horror flick. here are 5 things that’s freakin and geekin me out about my favourite horror movie this year
dont make IT the mistake to continue reading and giving me a GRUDE, cuz forewarned spoilers!!! here are the 5 things that i like about the movie
1st 5mins scenes of the movie as the title reveals
so good…a classic horror cinematic feel but with a modern twist to it.
you just see the airbnb house, surrounded by the dark stormy night.
love the minimal lighting color orange, lighting flashes on the side, heavy pourin rain, again that lighting. i really love the cinematography and will be talking alot about some of my favourite shots.
as the scene progress, there are these distinct shots thats pretty much mostly used in the movie. camera doesnt move when there are only action. using depth of field but framed that there’s something going on the background. tight shots for expressions and gestures.
all of this are choreograph to lead the camera, dolly into the dark side of the house, revealing the bold title texts, BARBARIAN.
freakin out cuz i kept saying, this is just a movie…this is just a movie. i soon realize it’s because of the insane tense and gripping cinematography by Zack Kuperstein
there are these shots i like where the background is framed that you'll see distinct blurry objects cuz of the depth of field. like a door, a window, an empty street...nothing is moving for-awhile until as you expect something is going to happen, just let it happen. be in the mercy of these great cinematography.
everything and everyone is normal - kitchen scene dialogue between tess and keith
so well done, my favourite part of the movie.
very genuine moment and a kudos to the very well written script!! and to Georgina C. and Bill S. for playing the parts, they’re so good!
the scene is staged very well, very nice lighting and coverage to see and hear how tess and keith bond of all these very odd situation in the begining.
that frame of keith's face having a nightmare. played by Bill Skarsgård
you just see his face and hear him having a nightmare. like it was low lit but seeing dof of foreground elements like tess legs cuz she was calling for him to wake up. then the objects in the room just frames keith’s face laying on the side of the couch.
this kind of shot was only used once when watching the whole film.
i’ve seen this kind of framing before and was only used once too from Steven Spielberg’s new movie, The Fablemans. i just thought it was so cool to have found a scary version in Barbarian
tess: nope - funniest and best line by tess, played by Georgina Campbell
whoott whooott teeeessss whoot whoott!!
all us audiences are thinking the same thing, oh heck noooo gonna stroll into a very dark long hall way.
there’s more that i like about the movie, how it was filmed, written, just one good horror movie. this was a true surprised and recommended by fellow horror film aficionado.
